One of the most obscure major-label artists of 1989 (and not to be confused with the more well-known Johnny P. of reggae fame), Johnny P. of R&B oblivion is still a treat to listen to, with a decent if not superb voice and a likeable, wholesome image. There are some surprisingly fierce and funky beats and slow, sensual backdrops here, and with the exception of Eumir Deodato, the list of personnel involved is fairly anonymous. Great tracks include the bouncy, upbeat "Love Is Just Around The Corner," the funky, new-jack-ish "Traffic Jam," and "Do You Yo-Yo," in which his voice sounds a bit like late 70s/early 80s Michael Jackson. There's also some nice slow jams here, including the title track and "True Love." A great album that fans of New Edition, Bobby Brown, etc. should enjoy.
